Letter
of protest
I
am writing to you concerning the industrial waste landfill proposed
for the Grand Lake area. I would like it to be known that I am very
upset with this proposed project.
In a time when the Grand Lake area is trying to deal with a failing
economy, job closures, and the exodus of its youth in search of work,
collective efforts are underway to make improvements that are focused
on attracting people and business's alike.
Recent workshops have created committees whose mandate is to take action
on issues that are important to the local citizens. Specifically, measures
are being considered that will increase tourism infrastructure, create
agricultural opportunities, better manage the forest, and explore innovative
manufacturing strategies.
With all the efforts to improve the area, and make a better tomorrow,
I am very concerned with the proposal to locate an industrial waste
landfill so close to a fresh water ecosystem that has obvious tourism
and recreational possibilities.
Their proposed landfill is huge. Everyone's grand children will possibly
be looking at a dump 100 acres in area, the height of a 4 story building.
What will "their" grandchildren be looking at, cleaning it up?
If
the Province is unable to pay $500,000 to fix the septic system at the
Grand Lake Provincial Park, how would it ever pay to fix Grand Lake
should some human error, flaw in science, or unpredictable, Act of God
cause the concept to fail? Dumps are forever and we all know, nothing
is "built" to last forever. Can we afford to close or clean Grand Lake?
This proposal is totally counterproductive to what the people of the
Grand Lake area are trying to do. It is inconceivable that government
may grant approval. How would this community, or the generations to
come, ever attract investors, vacationers, or visitors when the potential
for disaster is so close?
It will be a very sad day, if my elected representatives choose to designate
the Grand Lake area as a place to dump Industrial waste of this type.
I would rather be remembered as the generation which made a "positive"
difference in keeping the Grand Lake area, a great place to live, work,
and visit.
It's not too late.
Yours truly
