UPDATE: January 17 2005
The comprehensive environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the proposed
industrial waste landfill at the head of Grand Lake offers a significant
opportunity for public input, beginning with a public review of
the new guidelines.
The draft guidelines for this comprehensive EIA will be released
on January 18, 2005. The public has 30 days in which to respond
to these new guidelines. If there are areas of concern which you feel
have not been adequately addressed, you have until February 17th to
make them known to the New Brunswick Department of the Environment and
Local Government.
It is our understanding that multiple copies of the guidelines will
be available (later on in the day) at the Municipal Buildings in
both Minto and Chipman, Armstrong’s More Convenient in Chipman, and
Highway 10 General Store in Cumberland Bay. For those of you not living
in this immediate location, access is available at the following web
sites.

If you have problems accessing the guidelines, contact Pierre Doucet,
at the Dept. of the Environment, Pierre.Doucet@gnb.ca, (phone 506 457-6757)and
he will make them available.
You are encouraged to address your feedback to Pierre Doucet via email
or at this postal address: PO Box 6000, Fredericton NB E3B 5H1. We have
been told the guidelines might appear to be general in nature. If you
wish your input to be more specific, that would be absolutely appropriate.
It is critical for the Government to understand your perspective. Remember,
the deadline for public submissions is February 17th.
A number of scientists in various disciplines have agreed to look at
the guidelines for us, with the intent of alerting the Department of
the Environment to any omissions. As a Grand Lake community, we are
grateful and indebted to these professionals.
Following public input, the final guidelines for the comprehensive
Environmental Impact assessment will be issued to J.D. Irving. JDI and/or
its consultant must then develop the Terms of Reference for the project.
