UPDATE: JUNE 25TH, 2004
Upwards of 60 people met with Eric Smith of Chatham Biotec Ldt. to get
a better understanding of the legal process, called a declaratory judgment,
our committee and his company is embarking on. Over the next two weeks
4 of our committee members will be reviewing the 5 ½ hour video of the
June 9th meeting with the Irvings. All questions will be recorded and
given to Mr. Smith’s people. They in turn will compile a master document
in which our unanswered questions and theirs will be be molded into
one.
This document will be ready for pubic sharing at the next meeting: Monday,
July 19th , 7pm at the Cumberland Bay Fire Hall. This document will
be given to a judge, the Department of the Environment and the Proponent.
In effect, through the document, we are saying that there are still
concerns about procedures, unanswered questions, and gaps in the data.
Should the Department, knowing what we have given them in this document,
provide the proponent with a permit to continue, then a declaratory
judgment will be put in place which will hold the Province responsible
for any damages. It is our feeling that the Department, not wanting
this responsibility, will not provide such a permit.
We are encouraging all citizens to have input into this document, through
your personal questions. You can get in touch with either Ann or Randy,
by phone or e-mail.
The committee is putting a float in the Canada Day Parade in Minto and
the float will go on through Princess Park following the parade.
Some of you will remember from the meeting on June 9th, one panel member
promised that information regarding the constantly changing proposal
would be made available upon request. To date there has been no reply
to repeated requests for their revisions to the proposal.
Please continue writing to politicians: Brenda Fowlie, Minister of Environment
Premier Bernard Lord, Percy Mockler, Min. of Service New Brunswick (ask
him who will be responsible for the predictable decrease in your property
assessment should this proposal be accepted) and Joan MacAlpine, Min
of Tourism and Parks (asking how a toxic industrial waste dump will
encourage people to want to visit Grand Lake)
Remember the next meeting - Monday, July 19th, 7pm, Cumberland Bay Fire
Hall.
