UPDATE -September 27, 2004
Even the heavy rains and strong winds in the aftermath of the hurricane
did not prevent yet another large crowd from attending the meeting on
Sept 9th.
On Sept. 4th we received word that access to the proposed landfill site
may have to be altered if two property owners deny the Proponent access
across their land, via the route the company initially proposed. The
changed route would use the Marshall Road leading to Crown Lands involved
in Phases 2 & 3 of their proposal. The area originally referred to in
the proposal as Phase 2 would now be developed first. It was agreed
that we would investigate the implications of this.
On Sept 7th our delegation met with Opposition Leader Shawn Graham,
Grand Lake MLA Eugene McGinley, and Liberal Environment Critic Stuart
Jamieson. We had asked for their action plan in relation to this project.
Upon hearing of the proposed change to the application in relation to
the access route, Mr. Graham’s course of action became clear.
He has committed his staff to assist us in (a) researching the Crown
Land and Forest Act to determine the implications of the proposed ‘possible’
changes, and (b) request documentation through the Access to Information
Act.
Mr. Graham, Mr. McGinley and Mr. Jamieson all reiterated the position
of the Liberal Party in regard to this proposal - namely, to press for
a full and independent Environmental Impact Assessment.
