Opponents to Grand Lake Industrial Landfill Site scheduled to meet with Liberal leader Shawn Graham tomorrow. Fredericton, N.B.

A delegation representing the "Opponents to Grand Lake Industrial Land Fill Site" will meet with Liberal Opposition Leader, Shawn Graham, Tuesday morning, September 7th, in Fredericton. The group has requested information regarding the Official Opposition’s position on the proposal to site an industrial waste landfill in the vicinity of Grand Lake, which thousands of residents and summer cottagers oppose. With the Government’s slim majority in the house, the Official Opposition can play an important role in setting directions, and the group has requested information about their action plan for addressing the concerns expressed by residents, cottagers, farmers and local businesses.

Earlier this summer a delegation met with the Minister of the Environment, Brenda Fowlie to state their opposition to an industrial waste landfill being placed in the Grand Lake watershed. The Minister explained that the application is presently in a process called screening, intended to provide the Minister with as much accurate information as possible, prior to her making a decision as to whether the project should proceed. She encouraged Opponents to Grand Lake Industrial Landfill to continue submitting their concerns and any other pertinent information to her Department and the proponent. Minister Fowlie indicated the screening process can be a long one and could take one to one-and-a-half years, or more. The outcome of the meeting with Mr Graham and ongoing plans will be discussed at a meeting of The Opponents to Grand Lake Industrial Landfill on Thursday Sept.9th, 7pm at the Cumberland Bay Fire Hall. Everyone is welcome.
